A respiration system Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a respiration system for human individuals in need thereof. Background of the invention
Within the field of medicine it is well known to provide patients in need thereof with a respiration system in order to ensure a respiration in case the individual is suspected not to be able to uphold a safe respiration himself/herself.
Such a respiration system may in a simple form comprise a mask which is adapted to fit the topography of the surface of a human face. The mask covers at least part of the nose, at least the mouth, at least part of the chin and at least part of the right and left cheek. At the area of the mask which is intended to cover the mouth an opening is provided in the mask. A tubing for providing air to the individual is arranged on the outside in this opening. The tubing may be connected to an oxygen supply or an alternative form for air supply, thereby ensuring proper air supply to the individual.
In an improved version of this respiration system, the mask is provided with an oropharyngeal tube on the inner side of the mask. The oropharyngeal tube is adapted to be accommodated in the oropharyngeal airway of the individual thereby improving secure air supply to the individual. Furthermore, the oropharyngeal tube keeps the individual’s tongue in place, thereby ensuring that the individual’s tongue will not move backwards so that the individual will be choked in his/her own tongue.
Such a respiration system is known from US 2003 024532 Al. US 2003 024532 A1 discloses a respiration system comprising a mask comprising a face piece and an oropharyngeal tube. The oropharyngeal tube is hollow and is intended to be inserted into the individual’s oropharynx and thereby clear the airway to the individual’s lungs. The face piece may be provided with a strap in order to secure the face piece onto the individual’s face.
Another example of this type of this respiration system is disclosed in US 2003/0023530 Al. This system in essence is similar to the system disclosed in US 2003 024532 Al. The system of US 2003/0023530 Al, however additionally comprises the feature of including a nasal port on the front of the mask for supplying air/oxygen to through the oropharyngeal tract as well as through the nasopharyngeal tract.
Another type of respiration system for use by non-professional or non-medical persons is disclosed in EP 0 274 860 Al. This document discloses a respiration apparatus for providing mouth to mouth resuscitation. The apparatus comprises a mouth cover and a tube projecting from that mouth cover. The tube is intended for insertion into a recipient’s mouth. On the opposite side of the mouth cover, a hollow cylinder is provided. The cylinder comprises a filter in the form of a bag which prevents passage of liquids. The cylinder ends in donor mouthpiece allowing a helper to provide resuscitation to a recipient. A nose clip may be combined with the system in order to avoid respiration through the recipient’s nose. The mouthpiece of the respiration system disclosed in EP 0 274 860 Al is rather small and only covers the mouth of the recipient. Accordingly, the system EP 0 274 860 Al does not provide for proper fitting to the recipient without assistance from a helper.
Although these prior art respiration systems may be beneficial for use under sterile conditions such as encountered in a hospital, where air/oxygen of high quality is readily available, these prior art systems will not be suitable for use in the field in case of emergency situations in which artificial respiration is needed in order to keep a human individual alive. Furthermore, these systems may be too complicated to use by a layman in the field in an emergency situation.
Accordingly, a need persist for an improved ventilation system which will be suitable for use in the field in case of an emergency situation.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved ventilation system which will be suitable for use in the field in case of an emergency situation.
Brief description of the invention
This object is fulfilled according to the respiration system of the invention as set out in claim 1. Preferred embodiments are defined in the dependent claims and explained in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to a respiration system comprising a mask, an oropharyngeal tube, a filter and a strap; wherein said mask comprising an inner side and an outer side; and a right side and a left side; wherein said inner side is adapted to fit a face of a human being, said mask comprising a nose area, a mouth area, a chin area, a right cheek area and a left cheek area; wherein said oropharyngeal tube being a hollow tube having a first end and a second end; wherein said oropharyngeal tube is sealed to said mask in such a way that said oropharyngeal tube is penetrating said mask in the mouth area thereof, wherein said first end of said oropharyngeal tube being arranged at the inner side of said mask, and wherein said second end of said oropharyngeal tube being arranged at the outer side of said mask; said first end of said oropharyngeal tube exhibiting a downward bend; wherein said filter is provided with an air duct; said air duct is having a first end and a second end; wherein said first end of said air duct is being connected to said second end of said oropharyngeal tube.
The respiration system of the present invention is characterized in that said mask is having a size, a shape and a physical extension in such a way that said nose area is adapted to cover the nose of a human being; and in such a way that said mouth area is adapted to cover the mouth of a human being; and in such a way that said chin area is adapted to cover the chin of a human being and in such a way that said right cheek area is adapted to cover the right cheek of a human being and in such a way that said left cheek area is adapted to cover the left cheek of a human being; and in that said strap is adapted to fit at the back of the neck/head of an individual; said strap being mounted on said mask at a right side and at a left side thereof.
The respiration system of the present invention provides for improved conditions during emergency situations, in which an individual is in need of respiration aid. This is especially the case in a situation in which an individual needs respirational help in the field, where advanced hospital equipment is not readily available. The provision of a filter on the mask will ensure that microbes and secretes form the individual receiving respirational help will not enter the mouth of the person providing the artificial respirational help. The size and shape allows a tight fit of the mask onto the face of a human being.
